5 Toothpastes That Work For You and the Earth

Enjoy – November/December 2010 – Sierra Magazine – Sierra Club.

I will need to paraphrase here since they have a couple of articles on the same page.

Sierra Club asked 5 dentists who have NO affiliation with the pastes they chose.

Emmanuel Layliev – directs the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry and gets to shine up the teeth of stars!

His pick is Tom’s of Maine Whole Care.  It is a gel, unlike other ones, and fluoride is a naturally sourced ingredient.  There are multiple flavors all from real flavor oils.  Tartar control is up to silica-derived sand.

Fred Pockrass – a restorative dentist in Berkeley and is co-founder of the Eco-Dentistry Association.

He chooses PerioPaste from Bio-Pro Dental.  It is made from organic herbs.  It naturally cleans and whitens without the use of foaming agents.  It includes coenzyme Q10 and folic acid for gum health, and xylitol instead of flouride.  It is not tested on animals and packaging can be recycled.

Mitch Marder – of Integrated Dentistry in Seattle

He chooses Coral White.  They use ionic coral minerals harvested from above the sea.  The paste alkalanizes the pH of the mouth and neutralizes bacterial acids (we learned this in Microbiology)  that cause decay and gum disease.  Hydrogen peroxide is used for whitening.  It also includes mint oil flavoring and echinacea, goldenseal, and gingko for their antimicrobial properties.

Joe Kravitz – from Washington, D.C. and author of Dirty Mouth.

His recipe is a DIY concoction of 1/2 tsp sodium bicarbonate (can find this at any grocery store), 10 drops of water, 1-2 drops peppermint oil (or any other you like),  and 1-2 drops of tea tree oil.  It can reverse the damaging effects of acid, eliminate bad breath and whiten teeth.

David Fields – of Fields Cosmetic and Family Dentistry.

He chooses Kiss My Face Triple Action (they make sunblock also).  He says it is smooth; not gritty, and a minty flavor.  It includes Q10, and tea tree oil.  It is all-natural and contains organic aloe vera.
